Program boosts Appalachian girls’ education in Madison
Deborah Hicks-Rogoff loves teaching girls. She loves to see them turn on to a love of reading and to learn how to use technology. She also knows that given a chance, these experiences will lead to long-term success for them.
In 2010, she started a literacy program in Spring Creek for girls in Madison County now called PAGE (Partnership for Appalachian Girls’ Education) that has continued to the present with the original group of girls in the program about to graduate from high school.
“The concept was built on this idea of empowering girls through education, focusing on the middle grade years when girls are developing a sense of who they are and who they want to be,” Hicks-Rogoff said.
